From Central Ohio, Covington Kentucky is only about an hour and 45 minute drive. Pretty much straight down I-71.

This is an easy drive too, with plenty of places to stop off for rest breaks and food as needed.

In the region, Cincinnati usually gets the most attention, as it is a much more built up city, on the north side of the Ohio River. Cinci does have a lot to offer, but what if you want something a little bit different? Covington could be your place!

Why Covington?

Usually, when looking for things to do and places to see, Visual Ohio tries to stay within the confines of Ohio. However, there are some cool things in the bordering states too!

Normally when in this area, we do stick to Cincinnati and often we pop over to Newport for the Aquarium and the Newport on the Levee area (that will be its own story!). I decided to investigate the neighboring Covington area and found a few places that I wanted to explore.

Fortunately, I had an opportunity to travel solo – without the dogs, so that could open up my opportunity for exploration more, as needed.

Upon research, there were a few areas that looked ripe for some street photography, capturing some excellent street art. Cemeteries are also a favorite place. That may seem weird, but quite frequently, some cemeteries are also arboretums. Couple that with the ability to hike around with some possible fantastic architecture, statues and the quiet calm that comes with a cemetery…they should not be underrated as a destination!

Prime Locations

Roebling Flood Wall Murals

Very similar to the Portsmouth Flood Wall Murals here in Ohio, these pieces of art cover about a 1/4 mile of the wall protecting the North Kentucky Convention Center and surrounding areas. The depictions show life and events in the area through out Kentucky’s past.

Mainstrasse

Cincinnati and Covington/Newport have a rich German heritage. Mainstrasse or “Main Street” is at the heart of a German immigrant established neighborhood. There are many stores, establishments, restaurants for everyone. Goebel Park has a giant clock tower and playground, there is a main strip with a fountain.

Madison Avenue

Using Google Street View, I found this fantastic 2 mile long section of Covington, jam packed with restaurants, stores, street art, and fabulous architecture. You can walk from the Roebling Flood Mural Wall area, straight down Madison Avenue and have wonderful sights to see all along the way.

Historic Linden Grove Cemetery and Arboretum

A smaller cemetery, but one that has some nice trails, multiple entrances and old crypts to view. A statue of a soldier canals be found to honor American war veterans.

Highlands Cemetery

Much larger than the Historic Linden Grover Cemetery, there are large markers, crypts and such here for viewing. While visiting, there were a lot of people taking advantage of walking the trails and enjoying the unseasonably warm February day.

I can definitely see this being a location for a repeat visit! If you are close to Cincinnati, or find, as I do that the hour and 40 minute drive is something doable for you – Covington, KY is a worth checking out!
