Background
A 2-Day arts festival organized by the Franklinton Arts District. Urban Scrawl has been an annual event since 2007, featuring art murals from over 60 local artists. This is one of central Ohio’s largest urban renewal projects.
VisualOhio returned to cover this event after a few years hiatus! Check out the images and impressions below!
Please note that a lot of the pieces you’ll see from the artists are “in progress” and may not represent the finished piece.

Impression
Urban Scrawl has always been one of our favorite annual events. The artists have such a wide variety of topics, styles and mediums that we are pleasantly surprised by the level of talent each year.
The vast amount of preparation that goes into these projects is amazing. From concept design to getting the supplies to implementation. Big murals and big ideas require large amounts of preparation.

Urban Scrawl has historically been in the hot, summer months here in Columbus, but now it has moved to a more cool fall season in October.
The location has also changed slightly. Still in the same part of town, but instead of the artists lining up inside the parking area of 400 W. Rich Street, a side street was blocked off to make room for the artists to work

Local artists spaces in 2 buildings were also open for the public to go in and see the work and some artists were even selling some pieces.
Music is also an important part of the Urban Scrawl experience. During our visit the there was a harp player plucked the strings for our listening pleasure and after her performance a guitarist also strummed away some familiar covers and same original pieces.
Urban Scrawl has always been an experience. It has also been a fun time for all ages. If you are looking for a free, fun and artistic stop during the early fall each year in Columbus, Urban Scrawl should be an entry into your “to-do” calendar!
