Background

Fairborn, Ohio, a city of roughly 35,000 in Greene County just outside Dayton, was formed in 1950 by the merger of the villages of Fairfield and Osborn. It is a typical mid-sized Midwestern community with a walkable downtown, nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the usual mix of parks, schools, and local businesses. What sets it apart is its deep, year-round connection to Halloween, centered on the Foy family businesses that have operated on Main Street since Albert Foy opened a five-and-dime/variety store in 1929 (originally in Osborn). Over generations, and especially from the 1970s onward, the Foys shifted heavily into Halloween goods; today the family runs multiple shops along the strip—including the flagship Foy’s Halloween and Variety Store, adult and kids’ costume stores, a haunted museum, special-effects supplies, and related outlets—making it the oldest continuously operating business in town and a regional destination that stocks costumes, masks, props, and decorations well beyond October.

This concentration of Halloween retail, combined with elaborate seasonal displays (skeletons, giant props, window setups, and larger installations like themed scenes), has earned Fairborn the reputation as Ohio’s “Halloween capital,” “Halloweentown,” or the state’s best/most Halloween town. The shops keep the spooky vibe alive all year, while the community amplifies it each October with the annual Fairborn Halloween Festival (now in its mid-teens of years). The multi-day event fills downtown with 90–100+ vendors, carnival rides, live bands, a beer garden, costume contests, a Spooktacular Parade, and crowds that pack Foy’s and the surrounding streets, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond. Local leaders and residents openly lean into the identity, turning what began as a family variety store into a defining local tradition of decorations, costumes, and celebration that few other Ohio towns match in scale or permanence.

If you know me (Andrew) , you know I am a Halloween / horror movie fan…so October is definitely my time of year. Dani had some things she needed to do, so I took Nova, our awesome white German Shepherd dog and we made a road trip to see all the decorations in Fairborn!

Fairborn is worth the trip…even during the day, the Halloween displays at Foy’s, the downtown and surrounding neighborhood are worth it.

In talking with some of the residents, nighttime is the way to go if you can make it! They said that they light them up and have full blown smoke machines to really make the displays come alive.

2026 seems to be the year of the skeleton, and Fairborn had their fair share…but it did not stop there! There is a wide selection of other monsters, creepers, and scary sites…but also some fun ones too!

I highly recommend the strip – images do not do it justice. Make a trip out there, support the community, the business, and enjoy yourself checking out all the awesome work that went into making Halloween in Fairborn one of the spookiest stops of October in OH – IO!!
