Located south of Columbus in Groveport, OH, you’ll find a rather unassuming metro park at first glance.
However, take a little stroll through just the Tall Pines area and you’ll know that you’ve found something special.
The Walnut Woods Metro Park is one of many in the Columbus Metro Parks system. The park office is located off of Lithopolis Road.
There are 3 sections to the Walnut Woods park:
- Dog Park Area
- Buckeye
- Tall Pines
We investigated the Tall Pines area first. We will have some other posts to feature the other areas later on.
6833 Richardson Rd, Groveport, OH 43125
There are 2.6 miles of trails in this section alone, called the Sweetgum Trail. The trails are looped, so you can start and end at the parking lot and not have to backtrack on the trail that you came from originally. There is also a restroom facility here. It is a portable unit, but it is kept very clean and is ADA accessible.

The majority of the main trails are paved, with a small section being gravel. There is a small section that is grass that cuts through the back section of the main trails.

Once you get into the trail a bit, you’ll understand where this section gets its name. Very long and very straight trees line the trail path. In sections, the trees are very dense. This trail is beautiful any time of year and in any lighting conditions – be it bright sunlight or overcast.

This is such a great area to explore. The trails are very well maintained and this whole park area is dog friendly.
If you are in the area, visit the tall pines section of Walnut Woods, you’ll be glad you did.
